A grown-up oasis of calm in a busy family home

The brief

It’s so easy for a family home to be consumed by stuff, especially if you have young children. This couple approached us looking for some child-free, toy-free space in their home, so we saw the whole project through the lens of a busy parent. The house was built in 1910, so some areas needed updating, and they wanted a living room versatile enough to enjoy by themselves or for entertaining friends. They liked dark colours, but they wanted it to feel warm and welcoming.

Our solution

We took the room back to the brickwork and had it re-wired and insulated, and we replaced the old French doors with new ones, so it was draught-free and cosy. We added a working fire with a surround in muted colours, a walnut floor, wood panelling, grass-weave wallpaper, and velvet furniture for an elegant layering of soft tones and textures. We also added some art, by an artist the client loved, to create a focal point for the room.

We succeeded in creating a living space that felt luxurious in an understated, grown-up way. A soothing, tranquil place for the adults to retreat to at the end of a busy day.
